Airborne Mold, Permanent Filter Air Purifiers

With all the coverage it's received in the media in recent years, air purifier mold is something that many people worry about. Air purifier mold-particularly airborne spores from certain types of mold-can seriously affect both your own health and your family's health. In fact, there have been relatively isolated cases of individuals becoming seriously ill and even dying from prolonged exposure to airborne mold spores. So air purifier mold is something you certainly don't want to dismiss too lightly. Fact of the matter is, a 2006 study by researchers at the University of Cincinnati concluded that repeated exposure to a certain group of fungal spores (which are quite abundant in the air we breathe every single day) can even increase the incidence of multiple allergies in children as they grow into adults. "It turns out that the health effects of airborne fungal spores are more complicated than we thought. It's not enough to look just at total mold in our homes and offices. We need to understand how specific types of mold interact with each other in the environment to affect our respiratory health," said Tiina Reponen, PhD, professor of environmental health at UC and corresponding author on the study.

One advantage of permanent filter air purifiers is that that there are no disposable filters that can accumulate high concentrations of mold spores during their months of useful service life. Most mold spores range from 3-100 microns in size but some can be as small as 1 micron. So HEPA filter air cleaners that are typically rated to .3 microns or one third the size of the smallest mold spore are appropriate. HEPA filter air cleaners remove up to 99 percent of airborne pollutants (including much more than simply mold) from the air which they filter.
